Every May 9 Russia celebrates its great national holiday – Victory Day. This year, however, the invasion of Ukraine marks celebrations that will tour the streets of 28 cities in the country and some abroad where the army is deployed this Monday, according to the official magazine of its Armed Forces. What is celebrated? How is Kremlin propaganda using the liturgy of this holiday to connect it to the war in Ukraine? José María Faraldo, historian specializing in Russia, Central and Eastern Europe and author of Against Hitler and Stalin (Alianza) and Javier Cuesta, a journalist from El PAÍS in Moscow, break down in this video the keys to the 77th anniversary celebrations, which will have their epicenter in Moscow’s Red Square. This parade, where each year Russia flexes its military potential, will be somewhat smaller than in previous editions. 11,000 members of the army will participate in the convoy along with 131 ground vehicles and 77 from the air forces, according to the official program.
