Sustainability continues to be a rising theme in all companies, and ICTs are leading this change. On this, and on the subject of networks, Ericsson sets the pace again with the launch of a new three-sector tri-band radio capable of doing the work of nine single-band radios.
Called the Radio 6646, it consumes 40% less power compared to tri-band single sector radios, weighs 60% less thanks to the use of aluminum and takes up less space on the installation site.
“The new Radio 6646 will offer a very compact and flexible solution that will allow expanding 5G coverage in a profitable, economic and sustainable way. We believe that its characteristics of energy consumption and occupied space will make it a powerful engine for 5G and we look forward to the first deployments in Spain”, explains Vicente Abad, Technology and Radio Access Support Manager at Telefónica Spain.
Radius 6646
The new radio expands the multi-band capabilities of Ericsson’s three-sector products by combining the 900, 800 and 700 MHz frequency bands into a compact solution that supports all technologies from 2G to 5G.
Ericsson raises the bar on sustainability again with a tri-sector tri-band 5g radio solution
The Radio 6646’s low-band spectrum capabilities will enable it to enhance both 5G coverage and mid-band (3.5 GHz) performance in an energy-efficient manner, thereby responding to the growing communications service providers’ need for more sustainable solutions.
In addition, it will extend the reach of the WAN, with coverage from outside to inside, from rooftops and towers to interior spaces such as offices, basements, stores and homes. It will also increase the capacity of 5G networks, especially in combination with mid-band TDD carrier aggregation and 5G Standalone (5G SA).
5G deployments
Radio 6646 also supports the 700 MHz band, which is expected to be one of the key spectrums for 5G SA deployments, where low bands extend the performance and reach of mid-band TDD.
With three low bands combined, the Radio 6646 will improve coverage both outdoors and indoors for all generations of mobile, from 2G to 5G, as well as for IoT. The frequencies are generally compatible with all types of devices and offer immense potential for the growth of 5G services.
