In 1980, the inaugural year of the Razzie Awards‘The glow‘ earned 2 Worst of the Year Award nominations. Stanley Kubrick was nominated for worst director along with names like Brian DePalma (‘Dressed to kill’) or William Friedkin (‘On the hunt’) and Shelley Duvall Worst Actress for her role as Wendy Torrance competing against, among others, Olivia Newton-John (‘Xanadu’), Nancy Allen (‘Dressed to kill’) and the winner Brooke Shields (‘The blue lake’).
views today, those nominations seem more than debatable. But the co-founders of the Razzie John JB Wilson and Maureen Murphy they only regret one: Shelley Duvall’s for ‘The Shining’, considering that Kubrick was responsible for her histrionic performance by bringing her to the brink of emotional collapse. with their abusive behavior.
Speaking to Vulture, Wilson commented that “The members of the first year were, almost all, trailer factory workers. A group of us who had read the novel by Stephen King we went to see ‘The Shining’, and we didn’t really like what Kubrick had done with the source material. The novel was visually much more surprising, much more terrifying, much more compellingand we couldn’t understand why you would buy a novel that had all these visual opportunities and then change the garden maze, you didn’t do the snakes on the carpet, you didn’t shoot the children’s visions… If you’re going to say it’s ‘ The Shining’, you have to have certain key elements that weren’t there.”
Wilson added: “And, as I understand it, Kubrick was the one who decided what they cut from the novel. So I don’t feel too bad for Stanley Kubrick.” Murphy agreed: “Exactly. I think that guy is overrated. He made a good movie, and that was it”. We would have to ask Maureen Murphy what Kubrick’s “only good movie” was, for her to open our eyes.
However they do regret having nominated Shelley Duvall for her work on the adaptation. “Knowing the backstory and the way Stanley Kubrick pulverized it, I would take it back,” Murphy said. “We are willing to say: ‘Yeah, maybe that shouldn’t have been nominated.’ Everybody makes mistakes. that’s being human”.
On the Razzie website blog, Wilson writes about the nominations for ‘The Shining’: “Shelley Duvall’s raucous hysterical performance as Nicholson’s wife she was among our inaugural ten nominees for Worst Actress. She eventually lost to Brooke Shields on ‘The Blue Lagoon,’” Wilson commented. “In Duvall’s defense, we later learned that Kubrick seemingly drove her to the brink of insanity due to her abusive behavior. Later he was labeled as a genius (by some) and she as crazy. We suspect that he bullied her into chickening out, and in hindsight we’d like to blame him alone. Robert Altman could certainly get a better performance out of this once very promising actress.”
