The life of the protagonists of ‘Euphoria’ gives for a series… and for a play. That’s what Lexi Howard thought, always relegated to the background and a silent witness to all the plots. Until now: the play ‘Our Life’ puts all the spotlight on her and makes her the protagonist of a story of growth and friendship.
The relationship between Rue and Lexi, her jealousy over Cassie and a new dimension for Maddy are some of the new insights that ‘Our Life’ gives us. A delirious play that ends up drawing ovations from its viewers, but also raising blisters among some of the protagonists of ‘Euphoria’, who see themselves reflected on the stage and do not like very much the image they are forced to observe. We are going to review the keys of the work.
The cast
The protagonists of ‘Our Life’ are Grace, Hallie, Marta, Luna and Jade. Which of course are nothing more than alter egos of Lexi, Cassie, Maddy, Kat and Rue. Sam Levinson and the casting team must have had a hell of a time finding the right actresses to play stunt doubles for Maude Apatow, Sydney Sweeney, Alexa Demie, Barbie Ferreira and Zendaya, and the work they’ve done is incredible. Apatow is the only one present at all times, as Lexi plays herself, aka Grace, onstage. The other actresses are interspersed, sometimes taking over within the same scene when the shot goes from focusing on a girl to her reflection.
The person in charge of bringing Hallie/Cassie to life is Eden Rose Ginsberg, whom we have seen playing small episodic roles in series like ‘Modern Family’.

To play Maddy’s alter ego, Marta, they chose Izabella Alvarez, an actress we’ve seen in ‘Shameless’ and another HBO series, ‘Westworld’, where she played Lawrence’s daughter.

Isabella Amara (‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’, ‘Avengers: Infinity War’) has been in charge of playing Luna/Kat, while Aja Bair becomes Rue/Jade for the occasion.

What’s more, Ethan (Austin Abrams), Kat’s ex-boyfriend, is up for the Best Newcomer awards by stealing many of the scenes.either playing the mother of Lexi and Cassie or Nate, or rather his alter ego Jake.
uncensored
For a play written and produced by a group of students… ‘Our Life’ is strong. Like ‘Euphoria’ (of course, it’s the same story), it shows a teenage drug addict, very toxic romantic relationships and an explosively homoerotic dance number. Nobody has reviewed the script written by Lexi before putting up the work?
Overproduction
How much budget does East Highland High School have for its plays? Because ‘Our Life’ looks straight out of a Broadway production. Moving stages, multiple location changes, a top-flight lighting crew, and even a musical number with dozens of dancers. As fans are saying on social media… has Fezco paid for this blockbuster with drug money? If not, explain it to us.
Destroying Cassie (and humanizing Maddy)
Lexi may have, as she says, good intentions, but ‘Our Life’ treats some characters better than others. It is very exciting to delve into the friendship between Lexi and Rue (we were told that they were best friends but we had not really seen it) and we understand a little better how alcoholism and subsequent abandonment of the father affected the Howard sisters. But the portrayal of Cassie/Hallie as a shallow, love-obsessed hottie doesn’t give us a deeper side of the character, more of a caricature..
However, Maddy/Marta comes off very well as an unexpected sister to Lexie/Grace and a vulnerable young woman who takes refuge at her best friend’s house when her parents won’t stop fighting at home. Watching the play, it seems that Cassie is even more aware of the damage she has done to her former best friend by launching herself into a relationship with her ex.
Based on the real life of Maude Apatow
It is well known that Sam Levinson has collaborated with the cast of ‘Euphoria’ to develop and deepen the conflicts of the characters. In the case of Lexi, Maude Apatow (daughter of the filmmaker Judd) has turned her experience as a student fan of the theater who created with her own hands a very personal work in high school. “It was freely inspired by the high school play that I produced”the actress told Variety.
Just like Lexi, Apatow became a perfectionist little monster. “Everyone in the theater department hated me, but I just wanted to do a good job”.
A very intense shoot
This may have been the most complicated episode of ‘Euphoria’ to shoot, at least considering the number of people involved in most of the shots. Here there are no green screens, but the play was being performed on stage while the stalls were full of people, both extras and some of the protagonists of the series.
“We took a lot of time to shoot the scenes because they were so complicated. There were a lot of audience shots to consider…Sam had to make sure the shots in the play connected to real memories and had to be perfectly timed and interleaved”Apatow explained.
A very crazy musical number
And of course, the episode ends on a high note with the musical number that Jake/Nate shares with their gym buddies. A scene that manages to dislodge the unwavering Nate, and it is not for less: his discomfort with his sexuality becomes explicit and evident before the entire institute in front of that stage.
The choreography, one of the most obscene and provocative things that ‘Euphoria’ has ever done, and that is to say, was carried out by Ryan Heffington. Abrams had a blast recording it. “We shot that over three days, and it was a lot of work”he told Variety. “It took a lot of physical effort. I was doing that dance a million times those days. But I loved the dance, I loved the guys she was dancing with and it felt so real. I loved the energy that was transferred between the actors, the dancers and the public, because there were really a lot of spectators there “.
In addition, Apatow has revealed that the play had more musical scenes, but Levinson ended up removing them from the script before shooting the episode.
