The use of electronic invoicing in 2021 allowed the saving of more than €2,300M in management costs, 23.15% more than the previous year and avoided the use of paper equivalent to 16,486 pins, and greater working time in 19.80% compared to the previous year.
This is demonstrated by SERES in its “Comparative study of the use of electronic invoicing in Spain” an analysis that offers a perspective of the increase in the issuance and reception of documents issued by autonomous communities, type of companies and activity sector in the period 2020-2021 .
In this period, calculating the B2B, B2G and B2C areas, the total volume of electronic invoices issued in Spain in 2021 amounted to 296,469,689, which represents an increase of 28.12% compared to 2020 and 55,738. 642 more electronic invoices.
By communities
The Community of Madrid heads the list of the most active communities in 2021 in volume of electronic invoice issuance with a figure of 36.06% of the total invoices issued in Spain, Catalonia ranks second in the ranking with 31.63 % and Andalusia the third with 8.58%.
The three positions with the lowest data in emission volume are occupied by Ceuta and Melilla with a figure of 0.01%, the Balearic Islands (0.14%) and Extremadura (0.18%), respectively.
Regarding the volume of receipt of electronic invoices, the ranking is repeated: the Community of Madrid heads the list with 26.96% of the total. They are followed by Catalonia (23.12%) and Andalusia (8.93%). On the contrary, Ceuta and Melilla (0.2%), La Rioja (0.25%) and Extremadura (0.38%) are the three communities with the lowest volumes of electronic invoices received in 2020.
By sectors of economic activity
The services sector leads the use of electronic invoicing with 62.75% of the documents issued and 77.63% of those received, representing 56.01% of the issuing companies and 58.83% of the receiving ones.
Within this sector, retail presents the figures with the highest volume, with document issuance data of 30.42% and receipt of 18.86%, representing 30.42% and 28.49% of the issuing companies and receivers respectively.
In second place is the industry, with 36.85% of the documents issued and 21.87% of those received. This sector comprises 42.80% of the issuing companies and 39.87% of the receiving ones.

Within the industry, the manufacturing industry presents the highest figures, with data on documents issued of 30.42% and 18.86% received, representing 28.28% and 28.49% of the companies, respectively.
In the primary sector it is in last place, representing 0.40% of the documents issued and 0.50% of the documents received. Only 1.19% of the issuing companies and 1.30% of the receiving companies of electronic invoices belong to this sector.
By type and activity of the companies
Regarding the size of the companies, the largest issuers and receivers of electronic invoicing this year have been small companies with 32.83% of total issues and 31.03% of receipts. They are followed by the medium-sized company that represents 31.63% of e-invoice issues and 23.90% of receipts.
While large companies present a figure of 19.89% of emissions and 13.96% of receptions. The microenterprise, for its part, issues 15.65% of the invoices and stands out for receiving 31.12% of the total.
The companies that most issue their invoices electronically belong to the manufacturing industry, the retail sector, water and energy supply companies, construction and commerce.
