Searchlight Pictures has abruptly suspended production on ‘Being Mortal’, Aziz Ansari’s behind-the-scenes feature film debut. As reported by Variety, the production company has informed the film team by letter that the shooting was paralyzed after investigating a complaint, but that it had nothing to do with COVID-19. Although the exact details of the complaint filed are unknown, sources close to the production assure that the incident is not directly related to Ansari, who in the past was accused by a woman of “inappropriate sexual behavior”, and that he and the producer, Youree Henley, are working with the studio to decide what to do next.
“Can’t Continue”
The letter, published by Deadline, says:
“Dear Cast and Crew of ‘Being Mortal’:
We know you’re all concerned about recent production delays, and we want to provide an explanation. At the end of last week we received a complaint and we immediately investigated it. After reviewing the circumstances, it has been decided that production cannot continue for the time being.
We are truly grateful to all of you for everything you have put into this project. Our hope is to resume production and we are working with Aziz and Youree to determine the timing. The production will be in touch with you to share details about the outing and we’ll let you know as soon as we have more news to share. Searchlight Pictures”.
‘Being Mortal’ is based on Atul Gawande’s non-fiction book ‘Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End’ and stars the director himself alongside Bill Murray and Seth Rogen. It is scheduled to premiere sometime in 2023 and it seems that at the moment this is not going to change even if the shooting is delayed. The story portrays the American surgeon’s experiences with palliative care alongside reflections on medical care, which for him should focus on wellness rather than survival. Ansari has also taken care of adapting the script, after writing the series ‘Master of None’ and ‘Human Giant’.
