Several people have lost their lives this Saturday in the Dutch town of Nieuw-Beijerland -near Rotterdam- when they were run over by a truck with Spanish registration. The vehicle has the name of the transport company El Mosca, based in Murcia, painted on the trailer. According to the first police statements, there may be at least two dead (not three, as the authorities had initially indicated), in addition to several wounded. The driver, who was uninjured and is being questioned, has gone off the road and hit a group of neighbors who were having a barbecue in a meadow.
The rescue work will take several hours, and a dozen ambulances have been moved to the site, in addition to three emergency helicopters. Several injured have been taken to hospital. The police officers have explained that there are “many witnesses to what happened”, and that the truck must be removed from the scene of the accident with the help of a specialized crane.
It is not known how the accident occurred, but the vehicle has dragged in its path a group of people who were celebrating outdoors. At the scene of the events there are chairs and tables thrown, and several witnesses have said that everything has happened in a moment and they do not explain it. The van was on the road and then in the middle of the celebration, they explained.
Nieuw-Beijerland has about 4,000 inhabitants, and police fear there may be more victims. There are works in the area and this makes access by road difficult.
