Sean Penn is in the Ukraine. The American actor is in the invaded country filming a documentary about the armed conflict that he maintains with Russia, as confirmed by the Office of the President of Ukraine last thursday via Facebook.
“The director specially came to Kiev to record all the events that are currently happening in Ukraine and tell the world the truth about Russia’s invasion of our country. Sean Penn is among those supporting Ukraine today. Our country is grateful to you for such a display of courage and honesty,” he read in the translated statement.
Penn’s documentary is being produced by Vice Studios in association with Vice World News and Endeavor Contentand Penn had traveled to the country several times in 2021 for preparations.
“Sean Penn demonstrates courage that many others lack, including Western politicians. The more such people there are in our country now, true friends of Ukraine who support the struggle for freedom, the sooner it will be possible to stop Russia’s treacherous attack,” the statement continues.
Penn’s bravery isn’t new, as the actor is known for straying into hostile territory, such as when interviewed Chapo Guzmán in October 2015 for Rolling Stone magazine or when premiered ‘I will say your name’ in the official section of Cannes in 2016 (without a doubt, his most dangerous experience).
Penn has also always stood out for his Humanitarian workassisting in search and rescue efforts in New Orleans in 2015 after the Hurricane Katrina and collaborating in the reconstruction of Haiti after the 2010 earthquake, events that are reflected in the 2020 documentary ‘Citizen Penn‘.
