Quentin Tarantino is in negotiations to direct the return of ‘Justified’ as a miniseries, as reported exclusively by Deadline. ‘Justified: City Primeval‘ would return to the character of Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) in a self-contained series for the American channel FX.
‘Justified’ had 6 seasons between 2010 and 2015 in which Sheriff Givens dispensed justice on the streets of Kentucky as if he were a sheriff from the old west. The character of Olyphant is a rough and tough federal, in the style of ‘Walker, Texas Ranger’ by Chuck Norrisand was created by Elmore Leonard in 1997 as the protagonist of the novels’Soon’ and ‘Riding the Gap’.
If in the original series Givens was assigned to Kentucky after an incident in Miami, where he shot a mobster in a “justifiable” way (hence the title of the series), in ‘Justified: City Primeval’ we will see the return of the sheriff to Miami 8 years later and how he has the balance between being a US Marshal and taking care of his 14-year-old daughter. A chance meeting takes him from Florida to Detroit, and there he will fight to stop Clement Mansell aka The Oklahoma Wildmana serial killer.
‘Justified: City Primeval’ will once again be based on the work of Elmore Leonardwho also works as a producer, operates on this occasion will adapt a 1980 novel entitled ‘City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit‘ replacing its original lead with Givens.
And this is where it comes in Quentin Tarantino. The Tennessee filmmaker is passionate about Leonard’s prose and owns the rights to several of his novels. ‘Jackie Brown‘, the only film directed by Tarantino that is not an original script by him, is an adaptation of Leonard’s novel ‘Rum Punch‘, and the director has stated on several occasions that he would like to bring one of his westerns to the big screen, ‘Forty Lashes Less One’.
In addition, the protagonist of ‘Justified’ Timothy Olyphant and Tarantino worked together on the director’s latest work, ‘Once upon a time in… Hollywood‘ (2019), the film with which Tarantino threatens to withdraw from the cinema over and over again. But he didn’t say anything about the series…
Let us remember that Tarantino has already directed several episodes of his favorite series on other occasions, such as ‘ER’ and ‘CSI: Las Vegas‘, and has recently been revealed as the narrator of the series ‘Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber‘, which premieres on Movistar+ this February 28th and counts in its cast with the former regular collaborator of the filmmaker umma thurman.
The return of ‘Justified’, which in its first stage was nominated for 8 Emmys and won 2 of themstill does not have a release date, and the presence of Tarantino directing some of its episodes does not cease to be, for the moment, just one chance.
