Park Chan-wookacclaimed director of ‘old boy‘ and ‘The Maiden’ has been the first chosen by Apple for the campaign “Shot on iPhone” (“Shot with iPhone”), an advertising project for the apple brand in which great filmmakers will shoot short films with the latest generation iPhone.
‘Life Is But a Dream’ is 21 minutes long and combines martial arts with romance, dark comedy, and pansori (판소리)Korea’s traditional musical storytelling technique, to tell a surreal story that includes both a wedding and a funeral.
The synopsis is as follows: An undertaker (Yoo Hae-jin) digs up an abandoned grave to steal a coffin for the burial of “Marta Blanca” (Kim Ok-vin), a warrior who died saving a town. As he digs, he accidentally awakens the ghost of a former swordsman (Park Jeong Min). When that ghost tries to retrieve the coffin from him, he in turn awakens the recently deceased spirit of “Marta Blanca”.

In a “behind the scenes” released at the same time as the short film, Park comments that “’Life Is But a Dream’ seemingly starts out as a horror movie and then slowly reveals itself as a mix of fantasy, martial arts, romantic comedy and musical. It is a story I always wanted to tell. No specific camera came to mind when I wrote it. What’s amazing is that we can capture such a story on film with the iPhone.”
But it’s not the first time Park Chan-wook roll with a mobile phone. In 2011 he shot the short film ‘Night Fishing’ with an iPhone 4winning the Golden Bear for Best Short Film at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival.
With original music from Jang Young-gyu‘Life Is But a Dream’ can be seen on Apple Tv + and for free on YouTube, so we leave it directly below so you can enjoy it.
