The G-7 demands that Russia return the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant to Ukraine

The G-7 countries, which brings together some of the main world powers, have demanded this Wednesday that the Russian forces withdraw “immediately” from the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, because they consider that Russian control of this plant “puts the region at risk”.

The foreign ministers of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan, as well as the High Representative for Foreign Policy of the EU, Josep Borrell, affirm that both the plant and other areas occupied by Russian forces must be returned to Ukraine. “We demand that Russia immediately return full control of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant to its rightful owner, Ukraine,” reads the joint statement, published by the group’s German presidency. “It is the continuous control of the plant by Russia that puts the region at risk,” the text adds.

In the case of the Zaporizhia facilities, which this weekend has been the scene of bombings for which Moscow and kyiv blame each other, the powers believe that the risk of an atomic accident that would put in danger has increased “significantly”. danger not only to the Ukrainian population, but also to that of neighboring countries and even to the international community as a whole.

The ministers also took the opportunity to express their support for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which is also concerned about the situation at the Ukrainian plants. In this sense, they have requested the sending of an expert mission to rule out any risk derived from the recent escalation of tensions.

“IAEA personnel must be able to safely and unhindered access to all nuclear facilities in Ukraine and to contact directly and without interference the Ukrainian personnel responsible for operating these facilities,” they demanded. (Agencies)
