Inkjet to the demand for sustainability

Sustainability is driving major changes in how companies in Europe print. A transformation that has been accelerated, to a large extent, by social concern in relation to the climate emergency.

On this, the IDC Technology Spotlight sponsored by Epson has revealed in its report the projected annual progressive reduction in demand for laser printing, since 65% of European IT managers plan to allocate almost half of their budget to sustainable equipment and services .

“Inkjet printers are noticeably better, but not all inkjet printers are created equal. Ours do not require warming up the equipment to start working, either when activating them or when returning from a sleep state. This translates into faster printing, consistent high-quality results, significant time savings, cost reduction and up to 83% less energy consumption,” explains Raúl Sanahuja, communications manager at Epson Ibérica, says.

A sustainable implementation

Other critical factors heavily influencing enterprise IT decisions include the widespread rise of the hybrid work model and the drive for operational and economic efficiency in the face of the emerging global energy crisis. IDC estimates that in 2025, the average number of people who will work daily in an office in Europe will be 30% lower than in 2019.

The consolidation of teleworking has also imposed new security and print management requirements, since companies need to guarantee that their employees carry out their work on a daily basis in accordance with current legal requirements.

In addition, currently 13% of workers are already using printing supplies managed through subscription models. By 2024, IDC projects that 60% of companies will already be working with a subscription model for print services and related applications.

The study also details that 42% of IT decision makers see operational efficiency as one of their top priorities for the future, while 27% also say that profitability or cost savings is one of the top priorities. big key challenge

In this context, inkjet for business received very positive reviews: 39% of respondents say that the total costs of inkjet business printers have been reduced, and 75% indicate that the reduction of associated waste to consumables is a fact to take into account. 74% suggest the same regarding a reduction in replaceable parts and another 73% say that energy consumption was a contributing factor in their final decision.

According to IDC, refillable ink tank systems, which generate less packaging-associated waste due to much lower use of consumables, are seeing strong growth in office markets across Europe.

There are currently 10.7 million business inkjet printers installed across Europe, a figure set to increase as demand for more sustainable printing services grows.

The IDC Technology Spotlight report also notes that Epson’s inkjet technology (Epson Micro Piezo Heatless Technology) is highly regarded and at the forefront of printing technology, and is considered more sustainable than other technologies, such as thermal inkjet or laser.

Epson’s sustainability performance was also assessed against IDC Europe’s Technology Framework for Sustainability and Social Impact (TSSI), which assesses the main ways in which the ICT industry can impact businesses and sustainable sectors. Compared to the industry average, Epson outperforms in areas such as operational sustainability, environmental sustainability and circular economy.
