It has not been the brutal success that those responsible predicted, but today it can be said that ‘Uncharted’ has survived the curse of video game adaptations. Despite reviews that were generally mixed-to the bad (read the review of Fotogramas), it seems that the knife of the first weekend has passed far from the heads of Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg.
In the US, the film has grossed 106 million dollars (139 at the global box office) and it is already the best premiere of a video game adaptation since ‘Sonic, the movie’ (2020), fourth best in history, behind ‘Pokémon: Detective Pikachu’ (2019) and ‘Lara Croft: Tomb Raider’ from Angelina Jolie, which occupy the second and third place. All this, not counting the Chinese market, a country where it will be seen from March 11.
However, that does not ensure that the film has been profitable. Some basic data to understand why: first, because its budget was 120 million dollars (we do not know if it includes an extensive marketing campaign). Then, because success would be measured in more distinctly positive results at the box office, involving, for example, double the figures invested in its production (240 million, if we do not have advertising). Neither at the level of criticism, nor of public image, has this been an essential category premiere (as was the “must-see” of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’).
And ‘The Batman’ is comingwhich will be released in international theaters on March 4 and in China on March 18, with only a week to spare between the story of Drake and that of the Gotham vigilante. We expect one to completely eclipse the other’s media attention and, therefore, that the box office is also reduced.
Taking into account the evolution of the box office and its most immediate prospects, today, can a sequel be expected? Reuben Fleischerdirector of the film and responsible for the saga ‘Zombieland’ and ‘Venom’, has confessed today that “I can’t help but hope we’ll do a sequel. I think Sony is appropriately superstitious and doesn’t plan things without knowing how they’ll be received.” Which leads to, yes, there could be a sequel in the works.
The statements arise from Deadline’s Hero Nation podcast, where he also referred to his direct references, among which he highlights John Landis (‘Rogues at full speed’): “I think he’s probably the least hyped filmmaker. He is responsible for the creation of a genre, you can see the antecedent in ‘Rogues at full rhythm’, because each of those vignettes is a music video in itself. When you add ‘Thriller’ [videoclip que dirigió Landis]and its cultural impact, we could argue that he created MTV.”

“I don’t think he gets enough praise for the work he’s done”. Fleischer speaks of recognition that was deserved but never received. Nor was ‘Uncharted’ the great critical success that could be predicted for the adaptation of such a cinematic video game. how do you argue Rafael Sanchez Casademontin his review for Fotogramas: “The tape succeeds Nathan Drake, it does not take all the treasure but at least it comes out alivewith the occasional earned friend and enough trinkets to venture out on the next adventure.”
