JRR Tolkien returns but, this time, by the hand of JA Bayona. The director and producer Belén Atienza, his right-hand man, have come to the ‘Lord of the Rings’ series knowing that they were facing a complex legacy. “When I read that the projector was going to be I thought it was a wonderful idea to do it in series format, the books are monumental“, says Bayona, director of the first two chapters of one of the 20 fantastic series that want to be the new ‘Game of Thrones’. “We met with Patrick McKay and JD Payne (showrunners of the production) and we understood each other very well , They explained everything to us, not only the first season but the entire plot arc of the series. We saw that they were experts on Tolkien’s work. We read the scripts, agreed, and suddenly found ourselves traveling to Los Angeles to audition for Galadriel.”
Since the beginning of production we have already been able to meet a large part of its protagonists, and that it seemed that everything was going to have a rather slow start. “In the first episode, the presentation of a world in which a war has ended is being cooked little by little“, explains the director. “The conflict has left its mark on all races and this creates a link between very different cultures, since both elves, dwarves and humans are affected by the repercussions of what happened. And the second episode is a rollercoaster ride, crazy,” he laughs. “You think you’re going to get one or two adventure scenes per episode and we get four or five.”
‘The Rings of Power’ is just the beginning of Amazon Studios’ plans for his take on Middle-earth and make it into the top 15 fantasy series to escape reality. The contract of 250 million dollars with The Tolkien Estate, in charge of the writer’s estate, gives them television exploitation rights for (at least) five seasons. The intention of the producer is to add parallel projects that take us to other corners and moments in the history of this fantasy world.
