Sánchez and Stoltenberg meet at the start of the NATO summit
The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, and the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, are appearing jointly this Tuesday on the day the Atlantic Alliance summit opens in Madrid, which will end next Thursday. “In these difficult and complex times, you represent us all, thank you for your work and your leadership,” Sánchez told Stoltenberg at the start in English. “We are going to have the first summit in the history of NATO with the largest number of heads of state and government. We are also going to have the participation of the Indo-Pacific countries”, says Sánchez, referring to Japan, New Zealand or South Korea. “The purpose is clear: to convey a message of unity from the allies”, adds the President of the Government, who continues: “Democracies that come together to defend democracy, to defend the values that unite us, which are freedom, political plurality, the defense of human rights and an international order based on rules”, he adds.
“For Spain, this summit is very important because we are going to have the honor of having NATO’s strategic concept defined for the next 10 years, with the surname of Madrid, and we thank the Secretary General for choosing the city,” he continues. Sánchez, who recalls that this summit will also discuss the entry of Finland and Sweden into NATO, for which it is necessary to overcome the veto of Turkey, one of the member countries of the Alliance.
“In any case, what we are going to do at this summit is: firstly, define what are the threats that the allies are going to suffer in the present and in the future in the coming years; second, specify what resources we are going to allocate to deal with these threats; and thirdly, to strengthen an Atlantic Alliance that, after Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, I believe has made its present and future validity even more evident”, adds Sánchez.
