The justice of the peace in charge of identifying the victims: “In Uvalde, everyone knows each other. We are distressed”
The small town of Uvalde, in Texas, does not have a coroner, so the justice of the peace, Eulalio Diaz, has been in charge of identifying the victims of the Robb elementary school massacre, 19 children and two teachers. Upon entering the classroom where the shooter, Salvador Ramos, entrenched himself and opened fire, Diaz saw the lifeless body of educator Irma Garcia on the floor. “He was a year behind me in high school,” Diaz, 49, told Reuters.
“After I got home after identifying the victims, I started receiving messages on Facebook and realized that I knew the parents or grandparents of most of the children,” he says. The identification process, she explains, was complicated, as many bodies were in poor condition. “My job is to make sure we deliver the right body to families,” she adds.
In Uvalde, a rural town of 16,000 in central Texas, “everyone knows each other,” says Diaz. “We are distraught, but we are here to support each other.”
