Barcelona is the fifth largest city in the EU and the region with the highest GDP in the Mediterranean. It is a data center market with limited supply that is emerging as a major connectivity hub for greater resiliency.
For this reason, Interxion has announced its entry into the Barcelona market with the acquisition of land to build a new data center. The company’s position in the Mediterranean and the Iberian Peninsula will be strengthened with this new location, in addition to Marseille, Athens, Zagreb and Madrid.
“The Mediterranean has become one of the main interconnection points between Europe and the rest of the world thanks to its extensive network of submarine cables. This decision represents a fundamental step in expanding PlatformDIGITAL’s coverage”, explains Jan-Pieter Anten, Joint Managing Director EMEA at Interxion.

According to information from Telegeography, since 2016 the bandwidth in southern Europe has experienced a year-on-year growth of more than 30%, which represents a total increase of almost 200% in the region’s transmission capacity.
The new data center will be located at a key intersection of the global internet highway in the Mediterranean region, connecting the Americas to the west, Africa to the south, and the Middle East and Asia to the east.
Barcelona becomes the new data center hub in the Mediterranean
With a greater supply of data centers, an improvement in connectivity is expected, and Interxion’s clients in Spain will be able to serve almost 90% of the population of the Iberian Peninsula and the south of France with a latency of 4 milliseconds.
In addition, the new data center will allow companies and networks not only to exchange traffic in the region, but also to extend their services and expand their communities of interest on multiple continents.
Geographic situation
Located in the northeast of Barcelona, in the municipality of Sant Adrià de Besòs, the plot is assigned an IT power capacity of 15 megawatts (MV). Construction of this first data center (BCN1) is expected to start in 2022 and be completed in 2024.
The land where the future data center will be built is strategically located to provide fast, direct and resilient access to the main submarine cables and interconnection points.
