The pandemic has made it clear that digitization is essential for the evolution of any business. However, it is not enough to have digitized processes, it is also necessary to maximize their efficiency.
In this sense, Edge Computing is a key ally for companies, as demonstrated by the first study carried out in Spain by Barbara IoT, where it is stated that 40% of professionals in industrial companies plan to grow in investments and projects based on Edge Computing throughout 2022.
“This year, according to analysts such as IDC, Edge Computing is going to have a very important growth. IDC itself already predicts that this 2022 the turnover around Edge Computing will rise to 40,000 million dollars, even reaching 64,000 million dollars in 2025”, says David Purón, co-founder and CEO of Barbara IoT.

The forecast for the coming years is that Edge Computing will be at the center of the technological revolution. Very significant conclusions are drawn from it, such as the fact that 40% of the professionals from Spanish industrial companies surveyed plan to grow in investments and projects based on Edge Computing throughout 2022 and 40% affirm that they will invest twice as much in 2022.
A trend that is already a reality since more than half of those surveyed have already undertaken projects based on Edge Computing in 2021, investing an average of more than €400,000 per company in them. And what is more important, 66% of these companies already have structures prepared with talent capable of carrying out projects based on Edge Computing.

The IoT as an industry catalyst
In the industrial sector, one of the main objectives is to successfully carry out this digital transformation completely. According to an IBM study published in May 2021, 94% of the executives surveyed stated that they will implement Edge Computing in their companies over the next 5 years.
The electricity sector is the one that has made the largest investments and of the companies that have undertaken projects with investments of more than €1 million, 57% belong to the electricity distribution and transport sector.
In this new paradigm, International Data Corporation estimates that in just two years global spending on edge computing will exceed $250 billion. “The awareness of companies about the importance of Edge-AI is increasing and we have noticed it considerably in our revenues for 2021, which have increased by 150% compared to the previous year,” explains Purón, whose company has become one of the main players in the market by promoting the digitization of the industrial sector and giving it access to the wide window of opportunities that the IoT offers.
