That we are going to be wrong, that is clear. There are still a couple of months to go before the schedule for the Official Section of the Cannes Film Festival is announced and everything remains to be seen. It will be from May 17 to 28, although, to begin with, it remains to be specified whether the organization’s plans can be maintained to organize a face-to-face event again. For now, it is expected that this will be the festival that marks, once and for all, the reunion of the cinephile and the great authors. A return with all pomp, marked by big names, massive red carpets and perhaps, just perhaps, the absence of PCR tests?
Last Cannes was supposed to be that big event. However, the pandemic hit and the festival had to be delayed until July, reducing capacity and changing the entire ticket system to accommodate a press that was going to record lows. The big premieres happened, of course, with ‘Annette’ by Leos Carax opening to the tune of ‘May We Start’ by the Sparks Brothers. Then came another string of well-known names: they were Paul Verhoeven, Wes Anderson, Ryusuke Hamaguchi, Joachim Trier and Julia Ducournauwho with ‘Titane’ won the second female Palme d’Or in the history of the contest.
The 2021 Official Section had everything to stir up passions, and it did. Of course, there were (allegedly) no big celebrations after the premieres: protocols, distances and security personnel that almost matched the numbers of the attending public prevented them. What will happen in 2022? Who could know. It is easier to start predicting the presence of big names in the program. We forecast thanks to the filming dates of the great films, to the slots that year after year are dedicated to each type of premiere and, of course, to the stars that will put the glitter on an event that hopes to once again be the center of attention of all the media spotlights.
If the predictions come true, there will be two names that tirelessly repeat themselves: A24 and Virginie Efira. A24, meanwhile, could bring to the French coast the unstoppable Kelly Reichardt, who presented his great ‘First Cow’ at the Berlinale and who has ‘Showing Up’ pending release. Also to claire denis, who has just won the award for Best Director at the Berlinale with ‘Fire (Both Sides of the Blade)’ and could triumph again at Cannes with ‘The Stars At Noon’, if time permits. Finally, we hope to learn more about the work of saela davis and Anna Rose Holmerwhom the company will present with ‘God’s Creatures’.
Virginie Efira dazzled the last edition with ‘Benedetta’, and awaits a possible return to the Croisette directed by two women: Rebecca Zlotowski (‘Other People’s Children’) and Alice Winocour (‘Revoir Paris’), cult authors, who could be joined Serge Bozon, with Efira in a role of his ‘Don Juan’. Crimes of the Future (David Cronenberg)
A decade after ‘Cosmopolis’, which premiered at Cannes, Cronenberg could screen his latest film there, a horror film shot last year in Greece with a cast that includes festival favorites. Lea Seydoux and Kristen Stewart. Unfortunately, there is no release date for the film yet.

Triangle of Sadness (Ruben Östlund)

The Stars At Noon (Claire Denis)
The great French filmmaker triumphed in Berlin with her romantic drama ‘Fire (Both Sides of the Blade)’, but this year she could have a festival double with her debut in English on time. Starring Joe Alwyn and Margaret Qualeythe film has an A24 seal and was filmed last year in Panama. Based on the novel by Denis Johnson, it is set in Nicaragua in 1984during the revolution led by the Sandinistas.

The Son (Florian Zeller)
The sequel to ‘El padre’, written and directed by the playwright Florian Zeller and starring Hugh Jackman, Laura Dern and vanessa kirby, has been shot but not yet finished, so whether or not it enters Competition this year at Cannes depends on its post-production. We remember that ‘El padre’ won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay and for Best Actor, for Anthony Hopkins in 2021.

She Said (Maria Schrader)
We hope to see in Cannes the long-awaited adaptation of the book of Jodi Kantor and megan twohey about his work uncovering the entire history of abuse and aggression of Harvey Weinstein. The movie of Mary Schrader (‘I Am Your Man’) will see Carey Mulligan and Zoë Kazan like the two journalists from the New York Times. Produces Brad Pitt.

Other People’s Children (Rebecca Zlotowski)
Virginie Efira (‘Benedetta’) is in the cast of three films that could well be in this year’s Official Selection at Cannes.
In ‘Other People’s Children’ will play a childless forty-year-old woman who forms a strong bond with the young daughter of her new partner. The previous movie Rebecca Zlotowski‘An Easy Girl’, was in Directors’ Fortnight, where it received overwhelmingly positive reviews.
In ‘Revoir Paris’the one who was the director of ‘Proxima’ (Alice Winocourscreenwriter of ‘Mustang’) will direct Efira in the role of a woman who is trapped during a terrorist attack in a brasserie parisian Winocour is a regular in the parallel sections of the festival, and we imagine that with an actress of Efira’s caliber, she could be a safe bet for the Official Section.
Imagine a triplet of Efiras finished off by the contemporary rereading of Serge Bozon (‘Madame Hyde’) from the classic ‘Don Juan’. At the moment, we only know that it is a musical with Efira and Tahar Rahim (‘The Kindness of Strangers’, also preparing the ‘Napoleon’ of Ridley Scott), a couple who hate each other as much as they want to.

Asteroid City (Wes Anderson)
