The Oscar for Best Animated Film this year has a very high level. On the one hand, we have the practically unbeatable Disney and Pixar with the phenomenon that has been ‘Encanto’, with ‘Luca’ and with ‘Raya and the Last Dragon’. Also nominated is ‘Flee’, the film that has made history by also opting for the awards for Best International Film and Best Documentary. And finally we have ‘The Mitchells against the machines’, from Sony and Netflix, who have just received a major boost in the final stretch of the race sweeping the Annie Awards, the Oscars of animation.
The film by Mike Rianda and Jeff Rowe has won the eight awards it was up for, including Best Picture, Best Direction, Best Screenplay and Best Vocal Performance. ‘Encanto’ has had to settle for three: Best Music, Best Character Animation and Best Storyboarding. ‘Flee’, meanwhile, won the award for Best Indie Film.
On television, Netflix continued to sweep ‘Arcane’ as a great winner with nine awards, including Best TV Show for General Audiences. The streaming platform won twenty of the twenty-five prizes for which it was eligible.
Will ‘The Mitchells vs. the Machines’ Beat Overwhelming Favorite ‘Charm’ at the Oscars? The Annies have coincided with the Academy fourteen times out of twenty, but the Oscars tend, as we have said, to feel a weakness for Disney or Pixar. However, Sony Pictures Animation already managed to impose itself on the animation giants in 2019 with ‘Spider-Man: A new universe’, beating ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet’ and ‘Incredibles 2’. On March 27 we will find out if Uncle Oscar goes to the Mitchell house or to the Madrigal house. Here is the full list of winners of the 2022 Annie Awards:
