That woman is none other than Jane Campion, the favorite to win the Oscar for Best Direction for ‘The Power of the Dog’ after having collected the award for Best Direction at the Writers Guild Awards last Saturday, March 12 . Moments before the show, Campion gave Variety a wonderful retort for Sam Elliott: “I’m sorry, it was a bit stupid. He is not a cowboy, he is an actor. The west is a mythical space and there is plenty of room on the ranch. I think he has been a bit sexist“to end by noting that many of the best cowboy movies in the history of cinema, such as Sergio Leone’s spaghetti westerns, were shot in Spain.

As we have said, Jane Campion secures her position as favorite heading into the Oscars by taking home the award from her fellow filmmakers. Maggie Gyllenhaal makes up for her non-nomination at the Academy Awards with the statuette for Best New Director for ‘The Dark Daughter’. In her speech, she highlighted her admiration for the director of ‘The Power of the Dog’: “If I had a sports jersey, I’d probably put Jane Campion’s name on it. When I was 15 years old I went to the cinema and saw ‘El piano’, I had never seen anything like it. It changed my life“. Denis Villeneuve also wanted to show his admiration, in this case Steven Spielberg, when he collected his medal for ‘Dune’: “Mr. Spielberg, you are a giant to me. I am here tonight for you. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you have given and continue to give to cinema today. After all these years, you are still a pure source of inspiration so, sir, I salute you”.
