‘Jackass’ is today one of the most peculiar and well-known franchises of pop culture in the 21st century. Hooliganism and absurd physical humor are the two pillars on which Johnny Knoxville and the rest of the team built a saga that today welcomes millions of fans around the world wanting to have a good time. 22 years after the broadcast of the first program, this group of not-so-young-anymore premieres ‘Jackass Forever’, a new film with which to reunite, reminisce about old times and do what they like best, make people laugh through suffering. Because nothing else, but they fit the blows like nobody else.
Due to the imminent premiere, at eCartelera we have had the opportunity to speak with Johnny Knoxville himself, the most visible face of ‘Jackass’ from the very beginning, and with Jeff Tremaine, another of its creators who has always acted as director. Both of them have spoken to us about what ‘Jackass Forever’ means, especially after such a long time. Knoxville sees it as an opportunity to get people back into theaters after all the world has been through with the pandemic. “It’s been a long time since people could go to the movies to laugh”the actor points out.
And it is that Knoxville knows that, if ‘Jackass Forever’ is about something, like all its predecessors, it is about that, to laugh. That is the legacy of ‘Jackass’ and that is what he has tried to do again, even though they are already around 50 years old. “We had to do a two-day test in December 2019 to see what it would be like to ride at our age”says the comedian. In addition, the most recognizable faces have been joined on this occasion by younger people who were selected with very specific criteria. “They didn’t have to be specialists but people with whom to have fun”explains Tremaine, who is also clear about what was the most difficult trick to prepare on this occasion.
The last Dance?
On the other hand, both have wanted to reflect on the possibilities of returning in a hypothetical future. They are fully aware that they are old enough to continue trying the same crazy things as when they were 30 years old, but they have also shown that so far that has not been an impediment. And it is that, as Tremaine summarizes, “never say Never”. What seems evident is that they are ingenious enough to continue to overcome all the obstacles that are put in front of them and give eternal laughs to their fans.
‘Jackass Forever’ premieres in Spain in theaters friday march 11.
